The detached lower left arm of a Taiwanese veterinarian is clasped by a Nile crocodile's jaws at the Shoushan Zoo, southwest of Taipei, April 11. Chang Po-yu is said to be stable after emergency surgery to reattach the arm. The crocodile was thought to be asleep when Chang tried to pull out a tranquilizer dart.

Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, filled with sorrow and the remains of servicemen and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, is where Mary McHugh weeps for her fiance, Sgt. James Regan, May 27. It was McHugh's first visit to the gravesite for Regan, a Special Forces soldier killed by an IED explosion in Iraq in February.

The space shuttle Endeavour begins a successful liftoff from launch pad 39-A at the Kennedy Space Center Aug. 8 in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Among the crew is astronaut Barbara Morgan, a teacher from Fresno, Calif., who had been the backup to Christa McAuliffe on the Challenger mission that exploded following liftoff in January 1986.

A grieving Iraqi mother takes her dead 6-year-old son into her arms, not long after he was slain when their family car was fired on by unknown gunmen in Baqouba, Sept. 16. The boy's 10-year old brother was injured in the attack 35 miles north of Baghdad, as the family returned from enrolling the children in school.
