Hershey Kiss 1907-2007

Making of Hershey's Kisses

Do you remember your first Kiss? The Hershey's Kiss, an American classic, is celebrating it's 100th birthday this year. Watch how Hershey's Kisses, first introduced in 1907, are created in a method which has changed very little in 100 years. The machine process forms their distinctive shape. Early on, each kiss was hand-wrapped in silver foil whereas, today's wrapping machines can wrap up to 1,300 kisses a minute. The flag coming out of each Kiss is called a 'plume.' Voice of: Pamela Whitenack, Hershey Archivist.

The Hershey's Kiss Influence

Milton Hershey built his chocolate factory, town and theme park near his birthplace. Today, the town's downtown streets, named Chocolate and Cocoa Avenues, are lined with 107 streetlamps in the shape of Hershey's Chocolate Kisses, some wrapped while others are unwrapped. The Hershey Chocolate factory is still the largest, by square footage, chocolate factory in the world. Hershey is not the official name of the town, its actually Derry Township, Pa. Voice of: Minday Bianca, Director of Public Relations and Pamela Whitenack, Hershey Archivist.

Hersheypark history

Milton Hershey's philosophy was "One is only happy in proportion as he makes others feel happy." In 1907, the chocolate philanthropist opened a picnic ground for Hershey factory workers. Later a merry-go-round and amphitheatre where added and 5˘ Hershey's bars were sold. Today, the theme park is celebrating its 100th anniversary and is home to thrill rides, water rides, a Zoo, live entertainment, restaurants and shops. Voice of: Pamela Whitenack, Hershey Archivist.
